Boy George Returns 300-Year-Old Christ Icon Stolen After the Atilla Invasion

A 300-year-old icon of Jesus Christ, stolen from the church of Saint Charalambos in Kythrea during the 1974 Turkish invasion, has been returned to Cyprus after 30 years. The icon was found in the home of British singer Boy George, who had purchased it in good faith from an art dealer in London in the 1980s. Its identity was revealed in 2010 by a Dutch Orthodox archbishop, and Boy George agreed to return it immediately upon learning of its origin. The icon was officially handed over to the Church of Cyprus in 2011, with the Church expressing its gratitude to the singer. This case highlights the long-term consequences of the invasion and the effort to restore Cyprus's cultural heritage. It is estimated that around 20,000 ecclesiastical artifacts have been removed from churches in the occupied territories since 1974.
