Former House Speaker Demetris Syllouris and former MP Christakis Tziovanis were acquitted by the Criminal Court for charges of conspiracy to defraud the Republic and influencing a public official, related to the 'golden passport' case. The decision was made by a majority, with one judge dissenting. The announcement of the acquittal sparked applause from relatives and friends of the accused. A significant element in the acquittal decision was the lack of substantial evidence and documents, as well as the testimony of a Ministry of Interior official who stated that there was no pressure from Mr. Syllouris. The case concerned alleged mediation by Mr. Syllouris to promote the naturalization of investors who did not meet the requirements. After the reading of the dissenting opinion, Mr. Syllouris is expected to make a statement.
