Cyprus: Appeal Court Increases Sentence in Cannabis Possession Case

The Cyprus Court of Appeal increased the prison sentence for a convicted individual in a cannabis possession case, from 27 months suspended to 3.5 years in prison. The decision followed an appeal by the Attorney General, who deemed the initial sentence inadequate given the seriousness of the offense and the maximum penalty prescribed (life imprisonment). Despite the passage of four years since the original sentence, the Court of Appeal ruled that the increase was justified, considering the need for prevention and deterrence of similar crimes.
