“Dressed in patched clothes”: Colors, satire and memories of a century at the Limassol Carnival Museum

The new Limassol Carnival Museum, inaugurated in May 2024 and opened to the public in February 2025, is a space dedicated to the history and tradition of the Limassol Carnival. The museum, housed in the “Panos Solomonidis” Municipal Cultural Center, offers an interactive experience for visitors, showcasing costumes, musical instruments, floats and other objects related to the carnival celebration. The history of the carnival in Limassol is long and rich, but for many years it has not been adequately recorded. The museum comes to fill this gap, preserving and promoting the cultural heritage of the city. The creation of the museum marks the recognition of the carnival as an integral part of the identity of Limassol. The museum space is designed to be accessible and interesting for both adults and children. Visitors have the opportunity to explore exhibits related to various aspects of the carnival, such as Fat Thursday, the grand parade, music and serenaders. They can also learn about the history of the carnival and see rare objects from the archives of important figures. The Limassol Carnival Museum is open daily and has extended hours and free admission during carnival events. It is an important attraction for visitors and a place where the residents of Limassol can experience and celebrate their carnival tradition.
