Legal Service: Stricter Penalties Justified Due to Increase in Drug Crimes

The Larnaca Criminal Court has sentenced an individual to 20 years in prison for illegal possession of 110 kilograms of drugs (15.06 kilograms of cocaine and 94.96 kilograms of cannabis). The Legal Service reports that the court justified the harsh sentence due to the increase and repetition of similar crimes, despite the already strict penalties imposed. The drugs were found in five packages that arrived in Cyprus from Greece via a private courier company. The court noted that the only appropriate penalty in this case was a 20-year prison sentence for each charge, with the sentences to run concurrently. The case was handled by Public Prosecutor Antonis Antoniou on behalf of the Attorney General. The court's decision underscores the determination of the Cypriot judiciary to address the illegal drug trade with severity. The imposition of stricter penalties is considered necessary to prevent similar crimes and protect society from the negative consequences of drugs.
