Nigeria: Dozens Dead from Jihadist Attacks on Seven Villages

Jihadists from the Lakurawa organization killed dozens of people in attacks on seven villages in Kebbi state, northwestern Nigeria. Police and a confidential security report state that the attackers mobilized the inhabitants of the villages, resulting in the death of many civilians. The increase in violence from jihadist organizations and bandit groups in Nigeria has provoked the anger of the United States, which carried out surprise air strikes in coordination with Nigerian authorities in a nearby area, targeting jihadists. The situation in Kebbi state is particularly worrying. According to the security report, more than 30 civilians were killed in five of the affected villages. Security forces have been mobilized and operations are underway to arrest those responsible. Residents attempted to resist the attacks. The emergence of the Lakurawa organization has increased violence in northwestern Nigeria, leading to the training of more civilian guards to increase security. Some researchers argue that Lakurawa has ties to the Islamic State in the Sahel, however this remains disputed. The jihadist uprising in Nigeria since 2009 has claimed the lives of 40,000 people and displaced two million.
