Cyprus: Youth Without Prospects in a State Without Meritocracy

Cypriot youth face a situation without prospects, combining the difficulties in finding work with disappointment over the corruption and lack of transparency plaguing the state. Revelations of mismanagement and the operation of mechanisms without control reinforce the loss of confidence in institutions and the erosion of hope for a better future. Despite high rates of tertiary education, young graduates in Cyprus struggle to find jobs that match their qualifications, often ending up in underemployment or in fields unrelated to their studies. This leads to a feeling that education is no longer a guarantee of professional success. According to Eurostat data, Cyprus records one of the highest rates of young people with university education working in lower-skilled positions or outside their field of study. This suggests a structural mismatch between the education provided and the needs of the labor market. This situation is exacerbated by the lack of meritocracy and the feeling that success depends on personal connections rather than abilities. The article concludes that the disappointment of young people is a critical social consequence of corruption and lack of transparency, and that immediate action is needed to restore confidence in institutions and create a state that offers equal opportunities and prospects for all.
