22 Migrants Dead off Greece After Six Days at Sea

Twenty-two migrants died during an attempt to reach Europe from North Africa, after six days at sea in an inflatable boat. The 26 survivors, including a woman and a minor, were rescued by a Frontex vessel near Crete. The survivors testified that the dead were thrown into the sea on the orders of the smugglers. Two men from South Sudan, suspected of trafficking, were arrested and charged with illegal entry into the country and manslaughter. The incident comes during a period of increasing migrant deaths attempting to reach Europe, with the number of deaths more than doubling in the first two months of 2024 compared to the previous year.
