NATO: France's Nuclear Deterrence Already Contributes to Alliance Security

NATO “welcomes” the developments regarding French nuclear deterrence announced yesterday by French President Emmanuel Macron and looks forward to greater cooperation with Paris. France's nuclear deterrence already contributes to the security of the Alliance, while Macron's initiative aims to further strengthen deterrence. Macron proposed nuclear cooperation for the defense of Europe with Germany as a key partner, with the participation of eight European countries (United Kingdom, Germany, Poland, Netherlands, Belgium, Greece, Sweden and Denmark). However, France will retain its sovereignty in the use of its nuclear force. NATO considers it important for Europe to strengthen its role in ensuring a strong deterrence and defense. France does not participate in the NATO Nuclear Planning Group, but its nuclear force is considered complementary to the Alliance's deterrence force.
