New Regulations for People with Disabilities - Over 10,000 New Beneficiaries

The parliamentary Labor Committee has begun an article-by-article discussion on amendments to legislation concerning people with disabilities, with the aim of passing it before the end of the parliamentary session. The Deputy Minister of Social Welfare, Klea Papaellina, attended the discussion. MPs expect the reform to lead to the inclusion of over 10,000 new beneficiaries in disability benefits. This will concern people with severe disabilities who have been excluded until now due to the linking of benefits to the Minimum Guaranteed Income (MGI) and income criteria that took into account the income of spouses or part-time employment. The President of the Labor Committee, Andreas Kavkalias, stated that the goal is to substantially process the legislation and achieve improvements. The Committee has scheduled a meeting on Tuesday to continue processing, aiming to pass the bills to the Plenary Session before April 2 (with a possible extension to April 6). MPs expressed confidence that some of the Committee's proposals will be accepted by the Deputy Ministry, while emphasizing the need to increase the budget to improve benefits for people with disabilities and to bring Cyprus to a better position in the European Union in relation to similar benefits.
