President Announces New Meeting with Erhurman and National Council Convening

The President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, announced a new meeting with the Turkish Cypriot leader, Tufan Erhurman, and the convening of the National Council to be briefed on the situation in Cyprus. He also sent a written request to the United Nations Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, to set a meeting within March. The meeting with Mr. Erhurman was open and sincere, with discussions on progress in confidence-building measures and agreement on further guidelines for the negotiators. Views were also exchanged on substantive issues of the Cyprus problem, with the aim of restarting meaningful negotiations. President Christodoulides stated that the discussion also concerned the proposals that had been submitted in the past, including the recording of convergences and the reaffirmation of the basis for a solution. He stressed his commitment to resolving the Cyprus issue with full assurance of the acquired assets of the negotiations. Regarding Mr. Erhurman's announcement before the meeting, President Christodoulides avoided commenting and reiterated his firm position on the goal of restarting substantive negotiations.
