New Cases of Violence Against Teachers – Strong Condemnation from OELMEK

OELMEK strongly condemns the recent incidents of violence against teachers in Gymnasiums and Lyceums in Limassol and Larnaca. The incidents include verbal abuse, threats, attempted physical violence, and damage to teachers' property by parents and students. OELMEK emphasizes that such behavior is unacceptable and undermines the prestige of public schools, creating a climate of fear and insecurity. The Organization stresses that the safety of teachers and the school community is non-negotiable and demands immediate action from the Ministry of Education and the Police to strengthen prevention and protection in schools. It also calls for the development of clear protocols for managing incidents of violence by parents or third parties. OELMEK recognizes the need for school-family cooperation, but emphasizes that this must be based on mutual respect, dialogue, and legality. It categorically stated that no form of violence or bullying against teachers will be tolerated. OELMEK expresses its full support to teachers and commits to closely monitoring the issue, ensuring the protection of their dignity and rights. The Organization calls on all stakeholders to take responsibility for preventing similar incidents in the future.
