New Study Challenges the Absolute Role of Plant-Based Diets in Longevity – Can Meat Help the Very Elderly Live Longer?

A new study from China challenges the prevailing view that a strictly plant-based diet is the best choice for longevity, especially at very advanced ages. The research suggests that elderly individuals who consume meat have a higher likelihood of reaching 100 years of age, particularly if they are underweight. Scientists analyzed data from over 5,200 individuals over the age of 80 and found that meat consumption is associated with increased longevity in this age group, due to the provision of important amino acids that affect the function of the mTOR molecule, which regulates cell growth and aging. The study highlights the need for personalized dietary recommendations, taking into account body weight and the specific needs of the very elderly, rather than a generalized approach.
