New Adjournment in the Case of Avvakoum Monastery Monks

The trial of the two monks from Avvakoum Monastery, who are accused of 24 financial offenses, has been adjourned again to May 27, 2026. The adjournment was granted following a request from the prosecuting authority, which sought time to examine the possibility of limiting testimony and reaching an agreement on admitted facts due to the large volume of evidence. The defense reserved its position regarding the acceptance of the proposed facts. Alongside the adjournment, the defense submitted a request to modify the restrictive conditions imposed on the monks. The request concerned reducing the frequency of their signing at the Agios Dometios Police Station from twice a week to once. The prosecuting authority did not object, and the court accepted the request. According to the decision, the accused will now sign once a week, every Thursday, between 8:00 AM and 8:00 PM. The remaining restrictive conditions remain in effect. Monks Nektarios and Porphyrios face charges such as conspiracy to defraud, forgery, theft, illegal possession of property, money laundering, interference in a judicial process, and false tax declaration. Both monks deny the charges, and the presumption of innocence applies to them until their guilt is proven beyond a reasonable doubt by a competent court. The case has attracted widespread publicity due to the seriousness of the charges and the involvement of clergy.
