“Traffic Jam” Around Earth: China Files Plans to Launch Over 200,000 Satellites

China has filed plans to launch over 200,000 satellites to the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), marking a significant escalation in the space race with the US. The applications include two proposed mega-constellations of satellites, CTC-1 and CTC-2, aimed at providing broadband connectivity, data transmission, and location services. Although filing the applications does not guarantee the immediate construction of all the satellites, it represents a claim to frequency spectrum and orbital positions. This move contrasts with SpaceX's Starlink network, which numbers around 6,000 satellites and has plans for 42,000, but falls far short of Chinese ambitions. China seeks to strengthen its presence in space communications and improve connectivity in remote areas.
