Bangladesh's First Female Prime Minister Khaleda Zia Dies at 80

Khaleda Zia, the first female Prime Minister of Bangladesh, has died at the age of 80 after a long illness. The news was announced by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), founded by her husband, Zia Rahman. Zia had been facing serious health problems in recent years, including cirrhosis of the liver, arthritis, diabetes, and heart problems. She served as Prime Minister three times, from 1991 to 1996, for three months in 1996, and from 2001 to 2006. Her son, Tariq Rahman, recently returned to Bangladesh after 17 years in exile and is being groomed for the position of Prime Minister. Her health deteriorated during her imprisonment in 2018, following corruption charges under the government of Sheikh Hasina.
