Slight Increase in Renewable Energy for Heating and Cooling in the EU, Decrease in Cyprus

The use of renewable energy sources for heating and cooling continues to increase in the European Union, reaching 26.7% in 2024, the highest rate since 2004. This increase is mainly due to the use of biomass and heat pumps. However, the increase is smaller than the average annual rate of previous years. The new EU directive requires each member state to increase the share of renewable energy in heating and cooling at specific rates. Sweden, Finland, and Latvia are at the top of the ranking, while Ireland, the Netherlands, and Belgium have the lowest percentages. In Cyprus, the percentage of renewable energy use for heating and cooling slightly decreased in 2024, to 41.6% from 42.8% in 2023.
