A New Generation in the Shadow of Nicotine

New data in Cyprus shows that one in ten 16-year-olds vapes daily, a rate almost double the European average, while traditional smoking among adolescents has decreased. However, this doesn't mean the disappearance of nicotine, but a shift in consumption to electronic cigarettes, which are marketed as 'safer' and 'cleaner'. The nicotine industry has invested in the rhetoric of 'harm reduction', and sweet flavors act as a Trojan horse for adolescents. Social media normalizes vaping, creating the illusion that it is a common practice. Exposure to nicotine during adolescence can affect brain development, learning, and impulse control, while vaping often serves as a gateway to smoking. Despite the existence of a legal framework, the implementation of measures remains inconsistent, and adaptation to the new digital reality is lagging. The European research project RELIEF, coordinated from Cyprus, aims to prevent and address the problem.
