At least 30 people have died and over 530,000 households are without power as extreme cold grips the United States. Temperatures are expected to drop further in the coming days, with wind chills reaching -45°C in some areas. Heavy snowfall has caused widespread power outages, particularly in the southern US. A state of emergency has been declared in 20 states and Washington, D.C. A plane crashed in Maine, killing seven of the eight people on board.
