Transitional Leadership in Iran: Alireza Arafi Assumes Role After Khamenei's Death

Following the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Alireza Arafi has been appointed as the interim supreme leader of Iran by the Leadership Council until a new leader is elected by the Assembly of Experts. Arafi, a cleric and member of the Guardian Council, holds significant positions within the Iranian system, including leading the national network of Islamic Seminaries and participating in the Assembly of Experts. He is described as a “modern” hardliner, with knowledge of technology and an emphasis on promoting Iranian ideology through digital tools. His rise is seen as signaling a continuation of the regime's ideological line during a period of uncertainty, and he is considered a reliable and secure figure by the Revolutionary Guards. Alongside Arafi, the Leadership Council includes President Masoud Pezeskian and Head of the Judiciary Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei, ensuring the functionality of the state until a permanent leader is appointed.
