Menelaou: Trust in Olguin Remains

The negotiator for the Greek Cypriot side in the Cyprus issue, Menelaos Menelaou, stated that there is trust in the Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General for Cyprus, Maria Angela Holguin, and that there is no confrontation with the United Nations. Mr. Menelaou emphasized the need to safeguard the achievements of Crans Montana as a basis for future negotiations, seeking a starting point that ensures it. Regarding the roadblocks, Mr. Menelaou mentioned that the opening of two new crossing points in Mia Milia and Athienou is feasible, provided that the Turkish Cypriot side accepts the UN proposal for the route of the Athienou – Pyroi – Aglantzia road. Responding to a question about Ms. Holguin's article, Mr. Menelaou stated that the Greek Cypriot side considers it legitimate for the Personal Envoy to express her views, even if there are disagreements on certain points. He categorically stated that there is no confrontation with the UN and appreciated their commitment to resolving the Cyprus issue. Mr. Menelaou reiterated that the parliamentary elections and the Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the EU do not constitute obstacles to the advancement of negotiations, emphasizing that the goal of the Greek Cypriot side is common with the UN and they will continue to cooperate to achieve it. He underscored trust in Ms. Holguin and commitment to cooperation.
