Election Commissioner Requests Clarification on Candidate Allegations

The Chief Electoral Commissioner, Menelaos Vasiliou, responded to statements made by the President of DIKO, Nikola Papadopoulos, regarding candidates for the Direct Democracy party and requested explanations and evidence regarding references to criminal cases. Mr. Vasiliou stated that the information will be forwarded to the Legal Service for further investigation. He reminded that the law does not require candidates to have a clean criminal record, but not to have been convicted of dishonorable offenses. All candidates sign a declaration confirming that they meet the eligibility requirements. The deadline for submitting candidacies is set for May 6, 2026, and a period for submitting objections will follow.
