AI Can Predict Severe Heart Disease from Mammograms, Study Finds

A new study published in the 'European Heart Journal' suggests that Artificial Intelligence (AI) can predict the risk of serious cardiovascular disease by analyzing mammograms. The AI assesses calcium buildup in the breast arteries, which is linked to an increased risk of heart attack, stroke, and death. The study, involving over 123,000 women, showed that even mild calcification of the arteries is associated with a significantly increased risk of cardiovascular events, while in cases of severe calcification, the risk is multiple times higher. This finding holds true even for women under 50 and remains stable even when considering other risk factors. Researchers believe this technique could help identify women with undiagnosed heart disease and propose integrating this technology into mammography screening programs.
