Emotional Farewell to Former Cypriot President George Vassiliou

The funeral of former Cypriot President George Vassiliou was held with particular solemnity and deep emotion at the Holy Church of Hagia Sophia in Nicosia. George Vassiliou passed away at the age of 94, and his funeral was conducted with public expense and honors befitting a serving President. Present were the President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, the entire Cabinet, the Greek Minister of Foreign Affairs, George Gerapetritis, the President of the House of Representatives, Annita Demetriou, representatives of the state, political, ecclesiastical, police, and military leadership, as well as a large crowd wishing to pay their respects. Also attending the funeral were foreign diplomats, former Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat, and the families of previous Presidents of the Republic. The late President's remains were transported to the church with a military guard of honor and accompanied by the Cyprus Police Philharmonic. During the service, eulogies were delivered by President Christodoulides, Minister Gerapetritis, the Rector of the University of Cyprus, a representative of the late President's associates, and his son, Evelthon Vassiliou. A short message from former Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci was also read. President Christodoulides emphasized George Vassiliou's significant contribution to the history of Cyprus.
