Taxi Drivers Threaten Strikes in Cyprus

Taxi drivers in Cyprus are warning of ongoing strike action starting March 10, 2026, if immediate solutions are not found for the problems facing the industry. The Pan-Cypriot Coordinating Committee of Urban Taxis has sent a letter to relevant government authorities, setting a three-working-day ultimatum for written responses and proposed legislation. The main issue they report is the illegal operation of private vehicles functioning as "pirate" taxis without a license, as well as "customer poaching" by individuals at taxi ranks and airports. They also express reservations about ride-hailing apps, which they believe create unfair competition. Furthermore, taxi drivers report the existence of misleading websites advertising unlicensed taxi services and call for stricter enforcement of legislation and increased controls. They also complain about the high operating costs that have put the industry in a difficult position. Finally, professional drivers raise issues concerning the infrastructure in taxi parking areas at Larnaca and Paphos airports, requesting an increase in pick-up locations and access to the bus lane for faster service. They also protest the lack of basic infrastructure, such as trash cans and toilets, in the parking areas.
