Saharan Dust "Smothers" Cyprus, Record Levels Reported

A strong episode of African dust transport from the Sahara is affecting Cyprus, with particularly high dust concentrations exceeding 2000 μgr/m^3 and reduced visibility below 2 km. The phenomenon is peaking today, especially in Limassol, where the dust concentration is expected to reach 500 μgr/m^3 during the afternoon hours, ten times the air quality limits. A gradual departure of the dust is expected on Thursday, but there is a possibility of reappearance in the evening. Rainfall is expected to help settle the dust on the ground.
