Marinos Mousiouttas: Pension Reform a Test and Opportunity

Minister of Labour, Marinos Mousiouttas, described pension reform as the biggest test but also opportunity for Cyprus, emphasizing the need for a system that honors a lifetime of work and supports the future of young people. Speaking at the 30th Pan-Cypriot Conference of SEK, the Minister stressed the importance of social dialogue and realism in the reform process, setting June 2026 as a milestone for completing the discussion and implementation in 2027. Mousiouttas praised SEK's role in shaping the Cypriot social and labor acquis, emphasizing that genuine social dialogue is a pillar of social peace, progress and cohesion. The tripartite cooperation, he added, allows for the modernization of the labor market with a human face, without leaving any worker behind. Pension reform, according to the Minister, concerns the dignity after a lifetime of work, the adequacy of pensions, the long-term sustainability of the Social Security System, fairness between generations and strengthening citizens' trust in the System. Pensions, he stressed, are a mirror of social justice and concern not only current retirees but also young people entering the labor market. Mousiouttas acknowledged the challenges posed by demographic developments and changes in the labor market, but stressed that the answer is not insecurity or hasty solutions. Instead, he emphasized the need for a more resilient, transparent and fair system that ensures the adequacy and sustainability of pensions.
