Foot-and-Mouth Disease Affects 5.5% of Livestock in Greece - Malas Comments on Culling Reactions

Stavros Malas, head of the special scientific committee for the reconstruction of the livestock sector, stated that 5.5% of the country's livestock (excluding pigs) has been affected by foot-and-mouth disease. He believes the loss is manageable if the spread of the disease is contained. He commented on the reactions of farmers regarding culling, even of vaccinated animals, emphasizing understanding for their anxiety but highlighting the importance of independent scientific opinion and accurate information. Mr. Malas clarified that vaccinated animals have a lower probability of showing symptoms but remain contagious. Vaccination, according to him, is primarily suppressive, reducing the viral load and the likelihood of transmission to neighboring units. The scientific committee will meet on Friday, with the aim of protecting livestock farms with animals of high genetic value, which will be used to replenish the livestock capital. Mr. Malas mentioned that the committee has received terms of reference and will operate with the participation of many subcommittees and specialized scientists, in order to ensure a comprehensive and participatory process.
