Macron Criticizes EU's Provisional Application of Mercosur Trade Deal

French President Emmanuel Macron has voiced strong dissatisfaction with the European Commission's decision to provisionally apply the trade agreement with Mercosur countries. He described the move as an “unpleasant surprise” for France, which had opposed it, and as “disrespect” towards the European Parliament. Macron emphasized that France will not support agreements that are lenient regarding imports and strict regarding domestic production. He underscored the need to respect the guarantees given to protect farmers and French citizens. The announcement of the provisional application was made by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, despite France's previous reservations.
