Longevity Boost: Just 5 Minutes of Extra Walking a Day Can Add Years to Your Life

A new study shows that even a few extra minutes of moderate physical activity per day can significantly increase life expectancy. Specifically, 5 minutes of walking a day is associated with a roughly 10% reduction in the risk of death, while even 2 minutes of exercise can reduce the risk by 6% for people with sedentary lifestyles. The study, published in The Lancet, examined data from 135,046 men and women from Norway, Sweden, the United States, and the United Kingdom. Participants wore accelerometers to accurately record their daily movement. The results showed that reducing sedentary time by just 30 minutes a day could prevent approximately 7% of deaths worldwide. Researchers emphasize that these small changes are realistic and achievable for most people, and can have a significant impact on public health. The study fills a gap in previous research, which often focused on achieving the 150 minutes of exercise per week recommended by the World Health Organization. However, the study is observational and cannot definitively prove a cause-and-effect relationship. Additionally, the results apply to people over the age of 40 and cannot be generalized to younger populations.
