Maduro: Judge Will Not Dismiss Drug Trafficking Charges

Former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro appeared smiling in a New York court, where a one-hour hearing took place. The judge rejected the request from Maduro's lawyers to dismiss the charges, due to a procedural issue regarding the payment of their legal services. Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, are accused of drug trafficking. Outside the court, Venezuelan dissidents gathered, expressing hope for justice, while a smaller group of left-wing activists demonstrated against US sanctions. Simultaneously, in Caracas, supporters of Maduro held a protest rally, with his son expressing confidence in the American judicial system and invoking his father's immunity due to his former position. Maduro's lawyers argue that US sanctions prevent the payment of their fees from Venezuela, violating the Sixth Amendment of the American Constitution. The prosecution, however, maintains that the Maduro couple has sufficient resources to cover legal expenses. The judge, Alvin Hellerstein, decided not to dismiss the charges, without setting a new trial date. The case remains open and its outcome is anticipated with interest.
