Madagascar: Death Toll from Cyclone Gesani Rises to 59 – 16,000 Displaced

At least 59 people have died and 15 are missing following the passage of Cyclone Gesani, which struck Madagascar's second-largest city, according to the latest official report. The cyclone, with winds reaching 250 kilometers per hour, particularly affected the city of Toamasina, causing widespread destruction. Previously, in February, Tropical Cyclone Fity had caused at least seven deaths and displaced more than 20,000 people. Most of the deaths from Gesani were recorded in Toamasina, a city of approximately 400,000 inhabitants. More than 800 people were injured and 16,000 were forced to leave their homes. The damage includes approximately 25,000 destroyed homes and 27,000 flooded, as well as damage to more than 200 school classrooms. The situation in Toamasina is difficult, with streets flooded with muddy water and debris. Residents are waiting in lines for food and health workers are conducting malaria tests on children. Pope Leo XIV expressed his support for the people of Madagascar. The international community has responded to the crisis, with China offering aid of 12 million euros and France sending emergency supplies, rescuers, and firefighters from the island of La Reunion. Cyclone Gesani continues its path towards Mozambique, already causing damage and deaths in the area of Inhambane.
