«Δεν είστε και δεν θα είστε ποτέ μόνοι», δήλωσε απόψε η Πρόεδρος του Ευρωπαϊκού Κοινοβουλίου Ρομπέρτα Μέτσολα απευθυνόμενη στους Κύπριους.
Αναφερόμενη στις εξελίξεις και την έκρυθμη κατάσταση στη Μέση Ανατολή από το βήμα της Ολομέλειας του θεσμού στο Στρασβούργο, η κ. Μέτσολα είπε ότι «γνωρίζω επίσης ότι οι Κύπριοι είναι ανήσυχοι και θέλω να είμαι σαφής: δεν είστε και δεν θα είστε ποτέ μόνοι».
«Η ευρωπαϊκή αλληλεγγύη είναι πραγματική, απτή και στο πλευρό σας. Θα στείλουμε το σαφέστερο μήνυμα ότι η Ευρώπη παραμένει σταθερή και ενωμένη. Η ασφάλεια της Κύπρου είναι η ασφάλεια της Ευρωπαϊκής Ένωσης», πρόσθεσε.
Η Πρόεδρος του Ευρωπαϊκού Κοινοβουλίου τόνισε επίσης ότι οποιαδήποτε επίθεση εναντίον ευρωπαϊκών στόχων ή κρατών μελών είναι απολύτως απαράδεκτη και «όταν η αποφασιστικότητά μας δοκιμάζεται, θα δούμε αυτό που βλέπουμε τώρα, την Ευρώπη να ενεργεί ως ένα σύνολο».
Η Ρομπέρτα Μέτσολα ανέφερε επίσης ότι η σκέψη της ευρωπαϊκής ένωσης είναι μαζί με όσους υπέφεραν, «που έχουν περιμένει δεκαετίες σκοταδιού και όλους όσοι υπέφεραν από τις πράξεις του καθεστώτος».
«Σκεφτόμαστε τις μητέρες που έψαχναν ανάμεσα σε πτώματα, τους πολιτικούς κρατούμενους που φυλακίστηκαν άδικα, αυτούς που βασανίζονται αυτούς που απαγχονίστηκαν, όσους υπέφεραν για τη ζωή, την ελευθερία, την γυναίκα», επισήμανε.
