EU Experts Arrive in Cyprus to Assess Foot-and-Mouth Disease Situation

Three experts from the European Commission are expected to arrive in Cyprus by Wednesday to assess the situation regarding foot-and-mouth disease. Senior Veterinary Officer, Sotiria Georgiou, stated that the experts will discuss the issue on-site and make decisions. Cyprus did not proceed with early vaccination of animals due to being free of the virus until the outbreak in the occupied territories, according to the regulations of the World Organisation for Animal Health. After the outbreak, Cyprus informed the Organisation and initiated procedures to order vaccines. A representative of the Veterinary Services assured that there is no problem for halloumi, as the vaccines will protect the animal population and facilitate exports.
