Parties Demand Measures for Foot and Mouth Disease – Issue to be Discussed in Parliament

Parliamentary parties are expressing their concern over the outbreak of foot and mouth disease in Cyprus and are calling for immediate measures from the government to contain the spread of the disease and support livestock farmers. Specifically, they are demanding accountability for the illegal trade of animals from the occupied territories and the prosecution of those responsible. Specific measures are proposed, such as the declaration of protection zones, strengthening controls at the borders, tracing animal movements, disinfection, and the creation of a mechanism for immediate financial compensation. The need to ensure cheese exports is also emphasized. The issue will be discussed urgently in the Parliamentary Agriculture Committee.
