Scholz: Germany Doesn't Need the Same Fighter Jet as France

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has questioned the need for Germany to have a fighter jet with the same capabilities as France desires, casting doubt on the 'Future Combat Air System' (FCAS) program. Scholz stated that Germany does not need an aircraft capable of carrying nuclear weapons or operating from aircraft carriers, as France requires. This disagreement over the aircraft's specifications threatens the continuation of the program. Scholz left open the possibility of seeking alternative partners to develop its own fighter jet. FCAS, a program also involving Spain, aims to replace French Rafales and German and Spanish Eurofighters by 2040.
