Measures for Prisons to be Announced in March: Mobile Signal Blocking Included

The Minister of Justice, Kostas Fytiris, announced that measures to address problems in the Central Prisons will be presented by the end of March, following a discussion at the Parliamentary Committee on Human Rights. These measures include the operation of a mobile phone signal jamming system to combat organized crime within prisons, as well as support for prison guards. The Minister also proposes replacing the existing prison building with a new, modern facility outside the urban area. Committee President Irene Charalambidou expressed satisfaction with the Minister's approach and called for a new meeting on March 23rd to receive updates on the actions taken. Particular emphasis was placed on the difficult working conditions of prison guards and the role of the underworld in prisons. The Minister has already visited the prisons four times and plans another visit to assess the problems firsthand. He acknowledged overcrowding as a major issue, as well as the problematic coexistence of petty and serious offenders. Solutions to alleviate overcrowding are also being considered, such as the deportation of individuals convicted of illegal work (excluding serious crimes) and the implementation of electronic monitoring.
