Marios Karoyian: Proposal to Suspend Foreclosures of Primary Residences Until End of 2026

The Democratic Rally (DIPA) proposes the suspension of foreclosures of primary residences until the end of 2026, aiming to protect borrowers and prevent the loss of homes for those owing up to €350,000. DIPA President Marios Karoyian stated that despite recent legislative interventions, gaps in the legislation still allow for the foreclosure of homes. The proposal includes strengthening the role of the Financial Commissioner, so that their decisions are binding for disputes up to €50,000, as well as the mandatory application of the Central Bank's Code of Conduct for loans with at least 50% of the capital repaid. In addition, it is proposed to refinance primary residences by first-degree relatives, under specific conditions. DIPA calls on the Government to reinstate the “Rent for Installment” scheme and proposes the creation of a Special Solidarity Fund, funded by a special levy on mortgage lenders, to support borrowers. The goal is to create a more people-centered system for protecting primary residences and addressing the problems arising from foreclosures.
