Outrage over MEP's Offensive Remark About People with Intellectual Disabilities

An offensive comment made by MEP Fidias Panagiotou about people with intellectual disabilities, referring to them as "pellos" (a derogatory term) during a podcast featuring Paralympic swimmer Loizos Chrysanthou, has sparked widespread condemnation. The president of the Cyprus Association of Civil Society Organizations (KYSOA), Themida Anthopoulou, denounced the statements as reminiscent of "dark ages," emphasizing the undermining of the fight for inclusion and respect for human rights. A particularly poignant detail is the reaction of an individual with an intellectual disability who listened to the podcast and asked their mother if they were the target of the remark. Criticism also focused on the MEP's level of education, as Ms. Anthopoulou pointed out that society has become more sensitive to these issues and children are educated about respect and inclusion. Mr. Panagiotou's behavior during the discussion, continuing to eat nonchalantly, was seen as demonstrative and offensive. The Cyprus Paralympic Committee announced it would send a letter of protest to the European Parliament, condemning the unacceptable reference. The Committee's president, Andreas Georgiou, called for a public apology from Mr. Panagiotou to Paralympic athletes and their families, stressing that the lack of an apology suggests a lack of genuine remorse. Furthermore, the president of the Pan Cypriot Organization of the Blind, Christakis Nikolaidis, described Mr. Panagiotou's intervention as "out of control" and warned of the serious damage such behavior causes to society and Cyprus as a whole. The question raised is how Mr. Panagiotou addresses these issues in his European work.
