Flu Season: Expert Warns of Increased Severity and Importance of Vaccination

Infectious disease specialist and pediatrician Maria Koliou noted that the flu has been increasingly severe in recent years, surprising experts. Following the death of a four-year-old child from influenza A, Ms. Koliou referred to the usual symptoms of the flu, such as cough, nasal congestion, fever and weakness, as well as preventive and protective measures. She emphasized that, although rare, the flu can cause serious complications, such as encephalitis or sepsis, even in healthy children. Ms. Koliou stressed the importance of vaccination, recommending that children be vaccinated from the age of six months to five years. The World Health Organization recommends vaccination up to the age of 15. For infants under six months, vaccination of their environment is recommended. In addition, the vaccine is recommended for people over 60 years of age, for people with chronic diseases and for pregnant women. Ms. Koliou urged avoiding crowds and ensuring good ventilation of spaces, as well as following basic hygiene rules, such as washing hands and using a handkerchief when coughing or sneezing. She noted that sick people should avoid going to work or school for at least 1-2 days after the fever subsides, in order to limit the spread of the virus.
