Loukaidis: No Response Regarding the Solidarity Fund – Calls for Abolition and Accountability

AKEL MP Giorgos Loukaidis strongly criticized the management of the Solidarity Fund, alleging a lack of transparency and serious responsibilities. During yesterday's session of the Institutions Committee, no answers were provided regarding the amounts handled by the Fund, nor were the names of the donors disclosed, with the legal service appearing negative towards their publication. Mr. Loukaidis accused the government of institutional collusion and corruption, claiming that the refusal to provide information is related to its opposition to the taxation of excess profits from renewable energy sources and wealth. Furthermore, the AKEL representative questioned the increase in contributions to the Fund after the change of government, as well as the fact that donors receive tax breaks and public contracts. He considered the Fund to be operating as a mechanism of collusion and corruption, while the government leaves funds unspent for student welfare. Mr. Loukaidis called for the abolition of the Fund and the transfer of its resources to the Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetic Research (ICNGR), announcing the submission of a relevant proposal to the Parliament. He stressed the need for the President of the Republic to provide answers and take responsibility, as well as to explain why contributors to political parties are publicized, while the names of the Fund's donors remain unknown. Finally, he called on the President to acknowledge the institutional deviation and take responsibility for what has happened with the Solidarity Fund, insisting that students receive minimal assistance while the government favors wealth.
