Cyprus: Drone Attacks Targeted Akrotiri Base, Not the Republic

The Government Spokesperson announced that the two drones which caused an alert were not targeting the Republic of Cyprus, but the British Akrotiri Base. The timely interception of the drones, he stressed, was the result of effective action. It was clarified that they were not ballistic missiles aimed at the “Andreas Papandreou” Air Base. The Government assured that all necessary measures are being taken to ensure the safety of citizens. Cyprus's FIR (Flight Information Region) is operating normally, however, some airlines have cancelled flights in the wider area due to the situation. Cyprus is in full contact and coordination with the United Kingdom, the United States and other partners regarding the incident. The Minister of Foreign Affairs expressed the government’s dissatisfaction to the British Minister of State for Foreign Affairs regarding London’s recent actions. The Government expressed its gratitude to the Greek Government for sending assistance. In addition, a telephone call is expected between President Christodoulides and Emmanuel Macron. The incident with the drones is causing intense concern for security in the region, while the Government seeks to ensure the protection of citizens and the restoration of normalcy.
