Louris on the Phidias Party: “We Continued Where the Ancient Greeks Left Off”

Neurophysiologist Yannis Louris, who emerged as the second most preferred candidate in Nicosia in the process of selecting candidates for the “Direct Democracy” movement, spoke on the “Front Page” program about his first involvement in politics and the philosophy of the movement. He expressed his emotion regarding the results, mentioning the personal sacrifices made over the years and making special reference to his wife and daughter. Mr. Louris described the candidate selection process as unprecedented, emphasizing the participation of thousands of citizens in a vote held entirely online through a special application, which was developed with private initiative. Despite initial concerns, the process went smoothly, despite reports of fake accounts and behind-the-scenes interventions, which, according to him, were on a small scale and did not affect the outcome. He characterized the process as historic, arguing that it is an important experiment in participatory democracy, continuing the tradition of the ancient Greeks who selected their rulers by lot. In the modern version, every citizen has the opportunity to self-nominate as a candidate and seek the vote of their fellow citizens. According to Mr. Louris, approximately 35,000 citizens have downloaded the application, while participation in the vote was significant, demonstrating citizens’ interest in a new form of political participation.
