Lebanon: HRW Accuses Israel of Using 'Illegal' White Phosphorus Munitions

HRW accuses the Israeli army of illegally using white phosphorus munitions in populated areas of southern Lebanon, after the resumption of hostilities with Hezbollah. HRW has verified and located the geographical location of snapshots showing white phosphorus munitions exploding over a residential area. The use of such munitions is illegal when used as incendiary weapons, as they cause severe burns and other injuries. HRW calls on Israel to stop this practice and the states that supply it with weapons to suspend military aid. Lebanon has previously accused Israel of using white phosphorus munitions, causing fires and forcing civilians to leave their homes. The situation is escalating with Lebanon becoming involved in the Middle East war and the Israeli army calling on the population to leave areas on the southern border.
