OSAK Calls for Measures to Protect GESY - "20 Complaints in One Month"

The Cyprus Federation of Patient Associations (OSAK) is calling for measures to protect the General Health System (GESY), as an increase in complaints has been recorded regarding inadequate care, insufficient services and disrespectful behavior of healthcare professionals. Last month, the Patient Rights Observatory received 20 complaints, which is a cause for particular concern. OSAK emphasizes the need for collective responsibility, but criticizes the uncontrolled attacks on hospitals and healthcare professionals, as well as drawing conclusions before investigations are completed. It points out that in many cases, citizens who submit complaints do not want an official investigation, making it difficult to investigate the incidents. OSAK calls on healthcare providers to prioritize patients and their needs, and citizens to submit their complaints officially and in writing, providing their consent for a full investigation. At the same time, it asks the Health Insurance Organization (HIO) to take corrective action and adopt new policies to protect patients. In addition, OSAK calls on the Ministry of Health to exercise substantial supervisory role, emphasizing that Cyprus has a healthcare system that can ensure universal access to healthcare services, but effective protection and control mechanisms are needed.
