Former Chief of Police Kypros Michaelides confirmed that a previous anonymous complaint existed against the Mayor of Paphos, Faidon Phaedonos, regarding domestic violence, specifically for allegedly assaulting his wife in 2017. The complaint, accompanied by medical documents, did not proceed due to the wife's refusal to testify, despite two attempts by the police. According to Mr. Michaelides, the family warned the police that they would be reported for harassment if they continued the investigation. The case was filed away by the Legal Service due to lack of sufficient evidence. However, Mr. Michaelides believes that the medical documents that recently leaked are more detailed than the document initially submitted, as they include the names of doctors, dates, and times. This, according to him, gives the police the opportunity to investigate the case in depth, taking testimonies from doctors and other individuals, even without the cooperation of the wife. The case has caused great turmoil in Cyprus, as the transparency and effectiveness of the authorities in dealing with domestic violence incidents are being questioned. The leak of the medical documents and the subsequent police investigation have put Mr. Phaedonos' political career at risk, as he denies the allegations. The police have launched an ex officio investigation into the leak of the medical documents, as well as the allegations of domestic violence. The investigation is expected to take a long time, as sufficient evidence must be gathered and testimonies taken from all involved parties. The outcome of the case will have significant consequences for the political life of Cyprus.
