Cyprus: 28.9% Reduction in Greenhouse Gas Emission Intensity

Cyprus has recorded a significant reduction in greenhouse gas emission intensity of 28.9% during the period 2013-2024, according to data from Eurostat. This reduction is larger than the EU average, which amounted to 20% for emissions and 34% for emission intensity. Cyprus is among the countries with the largest improvements, along with Estonia, Ireland, and Finland. Eurostat reports that the reduction is due to improvements in efficiency and an increase in added value. In Cyprus, the electricity and natural gas sector remains the main source of emissions, accounting for over 40% of the total. However, the improvement in the energy sector at the EU level is the largest, with a 53% reduction in emission intensity. Conversely, agriculture, forestry, and fishing saw an increase in emission intensity of 21%. Eurostat notes that Cyprus is following a strict policy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and protect the environment.
