Cyprus: 28.9% Reduction in Greenhouse Gas Emission Intensity

Cyprus has recorded a significant reduction in greenhouse gas emission intensity of 28.9% during the period 2013-2024, according to data from Eurostat. At the European Union level, the reduction was 34%, while gross value added increased by 20%. Cyprus is in a better position than countries such as Luxembourg, Lithuania, and Austria, but lags behind Estonia, Ireland, and Finland, which recorded even larger reductions. In 2024, greenhouse gas emissions in the EU amounted to 3.3 billion tons of CO₂ equivalent, a decrease of 1% compared to 2023 and a total decrease of 20% compared to 2013. In Cyprus, the electricity and natural gas sector remains the main source of emissions, accounting for more than 40% of the total.
