Cyprus Records Lowest Preventable Death Rate in EU in 2023

Cyprus recorded the lowest preventable death rate in the European Union in 2023, with 152.6 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants, according to Eurostat data. Of these, 62.9 were treatable and 89.7 preventable. Across the EU, approximately 1 million deaths were recorded from diseases that could have been treated or prevented. The main causes of death from treatable diseases were ischemic heart disease, colorectal cancer, and breast cancer in women. Among preventable diseases, lung cancer was the leading cause of death, followed by ischemic heart disease and alcohol-related disorders/poisonings. Eurostat notes that the largest variations between member states were observed in Latvia, Hungary, and Romania, while after Cyprus, the lowest rates were recorded in Luxembourg and Italy. These figures highlight the importance of prevention and early diagnosis in reducing preventable deaths.
