Government-DISY Clash Over Foot-and-Mouth Disease - Resignation of Agriculture Minister Demanded

A heated political controversy has erupted in Cyprus regarding the management of the foot-and-mouth disease crisis. The Democratic Rally (DISY) is demanding the resignation of the Minister of Agriculture, accusing the government of a lack of coordination, conflicting messages, and inadequate crisis management, leading to the destruction of the livestock sector. The President of DISY, Annita Dimitriou, emphasized that behind the numbers are people losing their livelihoods and that the situation is out of control. She also accused the government of approving the culling of asymptomatic animals despite assurances to the contrary. The government responded to DISY's accusations, accusing the opposition of populism and attempting to politically exploit the situation ahead of parliamentary elections. The Director of the Press Office of the President of the Republic, Viktor Papadopoulos, assured that the government is implementing all measures and protocols prescribed by European legislation to combat foot-and-mouth disease and is in constant coordination with the European Commission. He also announced that the competent European Commissioner is expected in Cyprus for further coordination and support for affected livestock farmers. DISY reiterated its criticism with a new announcement, accusing the government of refusing to utilize the party's proposals and attempting to discredit opposing voices. It argued that the party's warnings about the risk of spreading foot-and-mouth disease were ignored by the government, while simultaneously taking initiatives at the European level to address the crisis. This controversy highlights the tension between the government and the opposition regarding the management of the foot-and-mouth disease crisis and its impact on the livestock sector. DISY's demand for the resignation of the Minister of Agriculture represents an escalation of the criticism and indicates deep distrust in the government's ability to effectively address the crisis.
